On Thursday, July 11, Wanindu Hasaranga resigned from the T20I captaincy of Sri Lanka after the early exit of the team from the T20 World Cup 2024. After getting appointed in the captaincy role in the T20I format, the all-round cricketer led the Sri Lankan cricket team in a handful of matches, with not much success to his name.
Notably, during the T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, Sri Lanka played four matches in Group D, winning just one of those against the Netherlands before going out of the tournament. They lost to South Africa and Bangladesh, while the other match against Nepal was a washout.
In recent years, the captaincy role has seen quite a few players come and go, in Sri Lanka cricket, which is why the resignation from Wanindu Hasaranga doesn’t come as a surprise. As per the statement released by the Sri Lanka Cricket, the 26-year-old spoke about how it is in the best interest of the team for him to get relieved from the captaincy role in the T20I cricket while staying around in the player capacity.
The excerpts of the resignation letter from Wanindu Hasaranga read, “Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always.”
The Sri Lanka team will be playing the next time in the T20I format at home against the T20 World Cup champions India, in a three-match series from July 27 onwards.
