Scotland fast-bowler Charlie Cassell recorded the best bowling figures by breaking the previous all-time ODI record on a debut. Cassell picked seven wickets while conceding just 21 runs in 5.4 overs against Oman in the Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Dundee. Previously, the record was held by South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, who had scalped six wickets with 16 runs, when he debuted against Bangladesh in July 2015.
Third on the list and the only bowler who scalped six wickets on his ODI debut is West Indies’ Fidel Edwards. He recorded figures of 6/22 against Zimbabwe in Harare in November 2003. In the first two balls he bowled in his first match, he picked the wickets of Zeeshan Maqsood and Ayaan Khan. While he missed a hat-trick, Cassell picked the wicket of Khalid Kail on his fourth delivery.
In his second over, he compelled Shoaib Khan in the second over and recorded figures of 1.3-1-0-4. Next, Mehran Khan became Cassell’s fifth victim, and just when he dismissed Pratik Athavale, he joined the likes of Rabada and Edwards to become one of the three only bowlers to record six wickets on ODI debut. However, he went on to scalp the wicket of Bilal Khan and recorded his seventh wicket in his maiden international.
Owing to his sensational spell, Scotland dismissed Oman for 91 in 21.4 overs. Earlier while presenting ODI cap to Cassell, Scotland captain Richie Berrington said, “You’ve come back from a huge setback, with that massive injury you had, put you out for a year and a bit. Just to see your resilience coming back, getting back on the park, and just love watching what you do at Forfs [Forfashire], and just the way how you hold yourself is incredible.”
