Ashish Nehra reveals why he didn’t apply for team India head’s coach position

Former India pacer Ashish Nehra opened up on his reluctance to be Indian cricket team’s head coach and revealed why he didn’t apply for the same. Nehra, who currently coaches Indian Premier League franchise Gujarat Titans, opened up on why he does not want to coach Team India. Nehra has been associated with the 2022 champions since their inception in the same year. The former Indian bowler made his priorities clear and said that he is not willing to travel for nine months. 

Recently, the BCCI appointed Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s head coach, as he took over the charge from Rahul Dravid. When the Indian cricket governing body was looking for a suitable name to succeed Dravid, Nehra’s name also appeared in the contention. However, as Gambhir was appointed for the role till the ODI World Cup 2027, Nehra opened up and said why he wasn’t willing to take up to job. 

The 45-year-old told SportsTak and said, “I have not thought about that. My kids are young. Yes, GG’s kids are also young, But everybody has different thoughts. I am very happy where I am. I am not in the mood to travel for nine months.” Not only this, but Nehra also admitted that coaching Team India would be different from coaching an IPL team; however, he is confident that Gambhir would significant changes. 

Nehra, in the same interview, said, “The challenges are always there and it is a great opportunity also. It is a different kind of role compared to IPL. Gautam is always very passionate about the game, and has so much experience. Every coach and captain thinks differently.”
