Gautam Gambhir Career Records: From aspiring Delhi cricketer to Team India Head Coach

Former Indian Cricketer  Gautam Gambhir is now going through a new innings as he has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian National Cricket Team. His coaching stint for India will begin with an upcoming India tour to Sri Lanka for a limited-overs format that begins with a T20I series in Pallekele on July 27th. 

During his international career, Gambhir has been a player in big matches for India. He was the top scorer in the finals of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup which helped India to win two big ICC events. Gambhir has amassed 10324 runs in 242 matches across formats in his international career for India from 2003 to 2016.

Gautam Gambhir was born in a Punjabi Hindu family in Delhi on October 14, 1981. He did his cricket training at Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy in Delhi under the guidance of Sanjay Bharadwaj and Raju Tandon. Gautam started playing domestic cricket for Delhi in 1999 and was selected for his first intake at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru in 2000.

International Career

Gautam Gambhir finally made his India debut in an ODI match against Bangladesh in Dhaka on April 11, 2003. A year later, he made his Test debut against Australia in Mumbai on November 3, 2004. 

Four years after his international debut, Gautam Gambhir won his first major trophy with the Indian team when Men in Blue clinched the maiden T20 World Cup title in 2007. Gambhir finished as the second-highest run-scorer in that edition with 227 runs from six matches, including a 75-run knock in the final against Pakistan in Johannesburg.  

A year later, Gautam Gambhir was picked by Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals) ahead of the maiden IPL season in 2008. After three years, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011 and became the captain.  Another memorable moment in Gautam Gambhir’s career came when India lifted the ODI World Cup in 2011 after 28 years of wait. 

Gambhir again stepped up in a big game scoring a match-winning 97 runs in the final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.  He has also been a successful captain in the IPL, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to two titles in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
