Paris Olympics 2024 Shooting: Manu Bhaker wins India’s first medal; clinches bronze in women’s 10m air pistol

On Sunday, July 28, India clinched its first medal at the ongoing Olympics Games in the French capital city of Paris. Indian sharp shooter, Manu Bhaker, who entered the final of the women’s 10m air pistol on Saturday, finished second/third, behind Korea to get the first medal.

The 22-year-old began her final with a 50.4 in the first series of five shots to take the second spot. However, she dropped to third place with a total of 100.3 after two series. Her next shot added to her score to keep the aggregate total to 121.2, while Hungary’s Veronica Major got eliminated. 

After 14 shots, Manu Bhaker of India secured the third place with a score of 140.8, while she continued to be in the medal contention after 16 shots which added to her aggregate, making it 160.9.  After 18 shots, she continued to dominate the third place with an aggregate of 181.3 while a shot later, the aggregate read 191.3. After the 20th shot, her aggregate read, 201.3. After shot number 21, Manu Bhaker got near the silver medal with her aggregate getting to 211.4, making it 221.7 after shot number 22. 

Earlier on Saturday, July 27, the Indian shooter produced a prolific performance to become the first Indian female shooter to reach an individual Olympic final in the last 20 years. The last time, it was Suma Shirur, who reached the final of the 10m air rifle event at the Athens 2004. Moreover, Bhaker also became the first Indian woman to qualify for the 10m air pistol women’s final round at any Olympics. 

Moreover, this medal from the Indian sharp shooter comes since 2012, where the tri-colour last clinched a medal at the quadrennial Games.
