India’s T20I series against England to be shifted out of Eden Gardens: Reports

The T20I series between India and England, which is scheduled to be hosted by the Eden Gardens, is likely to be shifted to another venue. For the unversed, the Men in Blue will host the Three Lions for a five-match T20I series in January next year and the first match is scheduled to be played at the Eden Gardens as per the official website of the BCCI.  However, the venue is set to undergo massive renovation work keeping the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in mind, which is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

As per the old reports by The Telegraph, two new dressing rooms will be set up opposite the BC Roy Club House in case two games fall on the same day.  Apart from the two new dressing rooms, the sitting capacity of the venue is set to be increased. The renovation work might not end before December 2025. Notably, the venue hasn’t hosted any international games since the second semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023 between the eventual champions, Australia and South Africa although the venue did hold some of the IPL 2024 matches this year.

Eden Gardens might not host IPL 2025 matches

As the renovation work will reportedly go on till December 2025, it also means that the home matches of the IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders won’t be played in the 2025 season. Apart from this, the venue won’t be able to host the IPL 2025 final. Traditionally, the IPL final is held at the home venue of the previous year’s winners. For ex- MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai hosted the final of the 2024 edition as Chennai Super Kings won the 2023 edition.

“It’s quite obvious that the Eden will be allotted a few games of the 2026 showpiece event out of which, some will be marquee clashes. At the same time, it may so happen that the venue is allotted back-to-back matches, which was the case during the 2016 World T20 (when the Eden hosted both women’s and men’s final of the competition on April 3, 2016),” a source close to the proceedings had earlier told The Telegraph.
