Match Preview

In the second-last group-stage clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, New Zealand will square off with Papua New Guinea. The match is set to take place on Monday, June 17, at the Brian Lara Academy in Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. The ninth edition of the marquee ICC tournament was nothing short of a disappointment for the Black Caps. The Kane Williamson-led side failed to advance to the Super 8s after losing their first two games to Afghanistan and West Indies.

PNG, on the flip side, was not expected to make it to the next stage, hence, it wouldn’t be too much of a disappointment for the side.

Toss Prediction

toss prediction

New Zealand and Papua New Guinea haven’t played a T20I match and the forthcoming game would be the first time they will be up against each other. If we look at their previous respective matches in the current tournament, Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson won all three tosses in the previous three games. On the other hand, PNG’s Assad Vala couldn’t win even one toss.

While this is the last group-stage match of the sides, Vala might get lucky and come on top of Williamson during the toss on Monday.

Win Possibility

win possibility 3

Both New Zealand and Papua New Guinea have had below-par seasons in the T20 World Cup 2024, and while PNG wasn’t expected to come up with a statement-making performance, New Zealand’s performance was below expectations. Williamson and Co. lost the first two games to Afghanistan and West Indies. While they defeated Uganda in the third game, the damage was already done as the Afghans and West Indies already made it to the next stage.

On the other hand, debutants, PNG also failed to register their name in the Super 8 spot and displayed below-standard prowess in other games except the one against West Indies. Trent Boult, recently announced that the upcoming game would be his last for New Zealand, so needless to say, the Kiwis will run high on emotions. They would wish to give a memorable farewell to Boult and end the campaign on a high.

Predicted Powerplay Score and Average First Inning Score

powerplay innings score 2

The upcoming match between New Zealand and Papua New Guinea will be played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. As per the seven T20I matches played at the venue, the average first-inning score of the stadium is somewhere around 146. Considering this, we think the first-inning score of the game could be around 160-170 and the powerplay score could hover around 40-50.
