Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opener, is reportedly set to become the new head coach of the national team by the end of June month, picking his own support staff members. The 42-year-old is expected to replace Rahul Dravid, who is going to vacant the Indian head coach role after his final assignment in the T20 World Cup 2024.
As per the report from Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir, and the BCCI have already discussed the date of announcing his appointment as the new Indian head coach, as revealed by the BCCI source. However, the exact time of announcing his appointment would largely depend on how Team India finishes their ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in the USA and the Caribbean.
The BCCI was also informed by Gautam Gambhir about picking his own support staff members once he becomes the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Notably, the current head coach of India, Rahul Dravid, is working alongside Vikram Rathour, the batting coach, Paras Mhambrey, the bowling coach, and T Dilip, the fielding coach.
It is well documented that Gautam Gambhir played a key part in Kolkata Knight Riders winning their first IPL title in 10 years earlier this summer. He has assumed the mentor role in the franchise, making a few strategic changes and allowing the players to play freely in the tournament.
Moreover, in one of his recent interviews, Gautam Gambhir gave his views about the players getting selected on the basis of the Yo-Yo test results in cricket, calling it an unfair way of judging talent. He stated that the players should be picked for the team based on their batting and bowling skills.
